US Govt Shuts Down After Lawmakers Fail to Approve Funding

The United States government has shut down after Congress failed to reach an agreement on funding federal operations.

The shutdown followed a lapse in appropriations, leaving non-essential federal agencies to begin winding down operations.

Hundreds of thousands of federal employees are now either furloughed or required to work without pay.

Essential services, including national security, air traffic control, and emergency response, will continue to operate.

Public services such as national parks, regulatory offices, and other non-essential agencies are expected to face disruptions.

This comes after a similar standoff in November 2025, when disagreements between Republicans and Democrats over government spending and healthcare subsidies kept the US government closed for over 40 days.

A government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass budget bills or resolutions to fund federal operations for the new fiscal year.

Congressional leaders said negotiations are ongoing to end the shutdown but added that there is no immediate timeline for the restoration of full government operations.
