Plateau Reports 11 Lassa Fever Cases, Four Deaths
Plateau State has recorded 11 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever across seven local government areas, with four deaths reported since December 2025, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, has announced.
The affected areas are Quan Pan, Shendam, Wase, Langtang South, Jos North, Jos South, and Mangu. Baamlong disclosed the figures during a press briefing in Jos on Saturday, noting that the disease continues to spread despite government interventions.
“Twenty-eight suspected cases were initially reported, but laboratory tests confirmed 11 cases, triggering extensive contact tracing,” he said.
The first case was reported on 20 December 2025 in Quan Pan, prompting the activation of the state’s incident management team.
The outbreak has claimed four lives, including two health workers.
“Two deaths occurred at Jos University Teaching Hospital, one at Plateau Specialist Hospital, and one at Bingham University Teaching Hospital. One of the deceased was a medical doctor who treated an infected patient. Another doctor is currently hospitalised and receiving treatment,” Baamlong added.
He said 109 contacts are under follow-up as health authorities step up surveillance.
“We are carrying out active case searches, deploying rapid response teams, and launching public health awareness campaigns to curb transmission. Treatment drugs and protective equipment are available at health facilities,” he confirmed.
