A torrential rainstorm has destroyed about 200 houses and displaced more than 500 residents in Ijero Ekiti, Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

The heavy downpour, which lasted for nearly two hours on Wednesday, left a trail of devastation across the community. Residential buildings, religious centres, market stalls, and public institutions, including the Ekiti State College of Technology, Ijero Ekiti, were severely affected.

The Deputy Governor, who represented Governor Biodun Oyebanji during an on-the-spot assessment of the damage, expressed sympathy for the victims.

Governor Oyebanji described the scale of destruction as heartbreaking, noting that many roofs were blown off while several buildings were reduced to ruins.

He assured residents that officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) would conduct proper enumeration to ensure affected property owners receive support to rebuild.

The governor also disclosed that his administration had spent over ₦300 million in the past year to assist victims of fire and rainstorm disasters across the state.

The Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adewole, described the storm as devastating and unprecedented, while the Rector of the College of Technology, Dr. Moses Olubamise, confirmed that five buildings and ongoing projects were damaged, though examinations continued after emergency adjustments.
