Reps To Hold Emergency Sitting Over 2027 Election Timetable

The House of Representatives has scheduled an emergency sitting for Tuesday, February 17, to deliberate on electoral matters following the recently announced timetable for the 2027 General Elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, had on Friday announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly polls.

Addressing political parties, civil society organisations, and journalists in Abuja, Amupitan said the announcement complies with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires INEC to publish the election notice at least 360 days in advance.

The emergency sitting, conveyed to lawmakers via an internal memo from the Office of the Speaker, underscores the constitutional importance of the issue and the need for urgent legislative attention. Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Spokesman of the House, confirmed that the session reflects the House’s commitment to responding promptly to matters affecting Nigeria’s democratic process.

Deliberations are expected to focus on legislative issues arising from INEC’s announcement. Members have been urged to prioritise attendance, with all related business to be treated expeditiously.

Prof. Jake Dan-Azumi, Chief of Staff to the Speaker, explained that the sitting aims to rescind the House’s earlier decision on the Electoral Amendment Bill, particularly to adjust the timeline for INEC’s election notice.

The proposed presidential and National Assembly election dates coincide with Ramadan, which could affect voter participation.

The recommittal will review the statutory notice period from 360 to 300 days to allow more flexibility in scheduling elections.

All legislative processes on the Bill are expected to conclude the same day, enabling members to proceed with other political engagements, including the forthcoming APC Ward Congresses.

The House reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions through responsive lawmaking and acting in the best interest of citizens.
