Ramadan: Senate Begins Session to Review Election Timetable

The Senate has begun an extraordinary sitting to review the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill following the release of the 2027 general election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The House of Representatives is also expected to hold a similar session to make key decisions on national issues.

Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Prof. Jake Dan-Azumi, said the review was prompted by concerns that the proposed dates for the presidential and National Assembly elections fall during Ramadan, which could impact voter turnout.

The Bill’s recommittal includes proposals to shorten the statutory election notice period from 360 to 300 days, providing more flexibility in scheduling and aligning elections with national considerations.
