FCT Elections Separated True Political Players from ‘Roadside’ Pretenders — Wike
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the recent Area Council elections have distinguished genuine political actors from “roadside” pretenders who stage populist gestures for cameras.
Speaking in a special national broadcast on Sunday, Wike said the Saturday polls highlighted the contrast between the ruling party and authentic opposition in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the minister, Lere Olayinka, said Wike praised the peaceful conduct of the elections while noting that the results rejected politicians who rely on gimmicks to woo voters.
“The election has exposed the hypocrisy of those who buy corn and groundnuts from roadside sellers just to campaign,” Wike said. He added that FCT residents showed they “cannot be deceived by emergency democrats who ignore the good in our country and its government.”
The minister credited the successful elections to President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, saying the “Renewed Hope Agenda” has strengthened public confidence in democracy.
While congratulating both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on their victories, Wike emphasised that the elections demonstrated that the majority will prevail, but minority voices are still heard.
He also commended INEC and security agencies for ensuring transparency and order during the polls and urged newly elected council officials to see their roles as a call to serve rather than a trophy.
“You have been given a mandate to serve the people with humility, dedication, and commitment to excellence,” Wike said, assuring residents that the FCT Administration remains focused on delivering infrastructure and development in line with the president’s agenda.
