Iran Seeks To Move World Cup Matches From US To Mexico Over Safety Concerns
Iran is in talks with FIFA to potentially move its first-round matches at the 2026 World Cup from the United States to Mexico over security concerns, citing ongoing Middle East tensions.
Iran’s embassy in Mexico said the proposal is driven by fears for the national team’s safety if it travels to the U.S., one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Mexico and Canada.
Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation, confirmed the discussions, stating, “When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian National team, we will certainly not travel to America. We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran’s matches in the World Cup in Mexico.”
The talks follow comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested last Thursday on Truth Social that Iran’s team consider skipping the tournament due to safety concerns.
“The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety. Thank you …,” Trump wrote.
Heightened tensions between Iran and the United States have added uncertainty over the team’s participation in the global football event.
Iran had already qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament and was drawn in a group with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with matches initially scheduled in U.S. venues.
Iranian officials, including the country’s sports minister, have maintained that the team cannot safely compete under current conditions, leaving FIFA to navigate a potential logistical and diplomatic challenge over whether the matches can be relocated or if Iran will ultimately participate.
