Amaechi Blasts Tinubu, Calls for Resignation Over Maiduguri Bombings
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticised the administration of Bola Tinubu, accusing it of failing to protect lives and property following the recent bombings in Maiduguri.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his media office, the former Rivers State governor condemned the Monday night attack in Borno State, describing the Tinubu-led government as “abysmally incompetent” and lacking the leadership required to safeguard citizens.
Commiserating with families of the victims, the chieftain of the African Democratic Congress said Nigerians could not continue to mourn while the government “lives lavishly and ostentatiously” without taking decisive steps to address insecurity.
“This government is killing Nigerians. I repeat, President Tinubu’s government is killing Nigerians, literally destroying lives. He has failed in the most sacred duty of protecting the lives of the citizens of this country,” Amaechi said.
He described the attack as a reflection of deeper governance failures.
“The Monday bombings in Maiduguri is not just a tragedy, it is a damning indictment of a leadership that has grown complacent, incompetent, and indifferent to the sufferings and death of Nigerians to ravaging bandits,” he stated.
Amaechi also criticised the government’s response to recurring security breaches, accusing those in power of indifference.
“While families mourn and communities live in fear, those in power issue hollow statements and make empty promises. In fact now, they don’t bother to make promises anymore. They just move on as if nothing happened. Tinubu would rather be dining and partying in London while Nigeria burns. They just don’t care!
“How many more lives must be lost before they admit their failure? How many more communities must be shattered and destroyed before they take decisive action? Insecurity has become the daily reality of ordinary citizens, and yet the government continues to stumble, unprepared and unwilling to confront the menace with the seriousness it demands.”
He added that Nigerians deserved safety and dignity, not negligence and excuses, insisting that those in power had abandoned their responsibility.
Amaechi expressed sympathy with residents of Borno and families affected by the attack, saying their lives had been “shattered because of Tinubu’s government failure to protect them,” while calling for the President to resign.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the explosions in Maiduguri has risen to 26, with several others sustaining injuries.
The coordinated attacks occurred at three different locations across the city, causing panic among residents and prompting swift intervention by security agencies and emergency responders.
The Borno State Police Command, through its spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the casualty figures on Tuesday, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attacks.
