President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for deeper collaboration with the United Kingdom to address terrorism challenges in West Africa, stressing the need for sustained bilateral support to ensure regional stability.

Tinubu made the appeal during an address to King Charles III at Windsor Castle as part of his ongoing visit to the UK, where he highlighted growing security threats linked to the Sahel region and Nigeria’s strategic role in maintaining peace in the sub-region.

“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” Tinubu said.

He added that partnership with the UK remains critical in tackling these threats, noting that he anticipates discussions with Keir Starmer on enhancing intelligence-sharing, capacity building, and joint security operations.

The Nigerian leader delivered his remarks before members of the British Royal Family, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, alongside top officials from both countries.

Describing the occasion as a “profound honour,” Tinubu reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the UK, anchored on shared history, values, and mutual interests.

He also praised the contributions of Nigerians in the UK, particularly in the National Health Service, noting that Nigerian medical professionals play a vital role in healthcare delivery.

On governance, Tinubu referenced the influence of Britain’s legal heritage, citing the Magna Carta as a foundation for the rule of law and parliamentary democracy, ideals he said continue to shape Nigeria’s institutions.

Despite prevailing security challenges, the president expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing the country as a resilient nation committed to growth and development.

Tinubu further appreciated the UK’s support during Nigeria’s years of military rule, noting that its backing for pro-democracy movements remains memorable.

His remarks come amid criticism trailing his UK visit following a recent bomb attack in Maiduguri, Borno State, which left several people dead and others injured.
