Ogun NYSC Official In Custody Over Death Of Female Corps Member
The Local Government Inspector (LGI) for the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abass Olalekan, has reportedly been arrested following the death of a female member of the NYSC on Tuesday.
Daily Post reports that the corps member, Victoria Ariyo, serving under the local government, reportedly died from pregnancy complications.
It was learnt that she had terminated her pregnancy and died from complications that followed the procedure.
According to a source, Olalekan announced her death verbally and mobilised some corps members to organise her burial with her remains reportedly buried at Kobape Cemetery on Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Sources claimed that the LGI was involved in a romantic relationship with the deceased, which eventually led to pregnancy, and a termination that led to her death.
Daily Post reports that Ariyo’s death came barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, who happens to be her friend, died in what has been described as mysterious circumstances.
Mary, who was serving under the same Abeokuta South LG, was attached to the Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
A police source confirmed Olalekan’s arrest, saying, “He is in our custody at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”
Meanwhile, when contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, refused to respond to questions on the arrest of the LGI and the alleged involvement.
Babaseyi, however, confirmed that investigations in the death of Victoria Ariyo were ongoing.
“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi said in a terse statement.
