Elon Musk’s X to Block Monetisation of Foreign Engagement for Nigerian Creators
Social media company X has announced a new policy that will restrict users in Nigeria and other countries from monetising foreign engagement on content about geopolitical events outside their home regions, effective Thursday.
X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, revealed the update in a post on Wednesday, explaining that the Elon Musk-owned platform will now prioritise impressions generated by creators within their home countries.
According to Bier, the policy is designed to encourage users to produce content that resonates locally and regionally.
He noted that there would be fewer accounts in Nigeria focused on foreign figures like Ivanka Trump, and more emphasis on Nigerians sharing insights on national issues.
“Starting Thursday, we’ll be updating our revenue sharing incentives to better reward the content we want on X: We will be giving more weight to impressions from your home region—to encourage content that resonates with people in your country, neighbouring countries, and people who speak your language,” Bier said.
He added, “While we appreciate everyone’s opinion on American politics, we hope this will disincentivise gaming the attention of U.S. or Japanese accounts and instead drive diverse conversations on the platform. We invite creators to start building an audience locally. X will be a much richer community when there’s relevant posts for people in all parts of the world.”
