•Flooding Due To Blockage Of Waterways, Dumping Of Refuse

Residents and traders at Isida, a popular automobile market in Ilesa, Osun State have appealed to the state government and the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Owa Adesuyi Haastrup, over perennial flooding in the area.

The residents made the appeal in a video posted by a media aide to Oba Haastrup, Isaac Haastrup, after assessing their losses following a midnight downpour on Wednesday.

Some of the residents who spoke on the video, said the waterways in the area are too narrow and can no longer carry the volume of water coming from different areas.

The residents also bemoaned some of the traders’ attitudes to cleanliness, noting that while some of the traders do dump refuse inside the waterways, others have blocked them completely to erect structures.

A resident, Mr Olatunji Taiwo, lamented that the traders suffer whenever it rains heavily, urging the state government and the Owa Obokun to come to their aid.

He also expressed concerns regarding the ripple effect of the disaster on the health of residents who relied heavily on the sole borehole in the area for drinking water.

He said, “I want to appeal to the state government and the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland to assist us. The water coming from Ilemodu, Ikisin and Okeeasa, passes through Isida and the waterways cannot contain the quantity of water again.

“We have lost a lot of our goods to the water and we are appealing for help.”
