Kwankwaso Resigns From NNPP
The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the party with immediate effect, saying the decision was driven by the need for a “strategic realignment” in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Kwankwaso announced his resignation in a statement personally signed on Sunday.
He said the decision was not an easy one, but had become necessary in view of the country’s current political direction.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.
“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections.”
He added, “As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.
“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
The former Kano State governor also thanked the leadership and members of the NNPP for their support throughout his time in the party.
He specifically appreciated the party’s National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and leaders at all levels of the party.
Kwankwaso also expressed gratitude to members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for what he described as their loyalty, dedication and commitment to a shared political vision.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
His resignation comes amid indications that he is set to formally defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with the Kwankwasiyya Movement announcing on Saturday that the move would take place on Monday.
