Govt Summons OPM Pastor Over Marriage Plan for Autistic Daughter

The Rivers State Government has summoned Omega Power Ministries founder, Chibuzor Chinyere, over alleged plans to arrange a marriage for his 21-year-old autistic adopted daughter.

It also directed all orphanage operators in the state to comply with child protection laws and register appropriately with the authorities.

The directive was issued by Lauretta Dimpka, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

The intervention followed public outrage after reports surfaced that Chinyere allegedly proposed a marriage arrangement for the young woman, with incentives said to have been offered to prospective suitors.

Dimpka said the government stepped in after the matter went viral, noting that while the intention may have been well-meaning, it did not comply with existing laws.

“As a faith-based organisation, the interventions appeared well-meaning but fell short of compliance with the law,” she said.

She cited the Child’s Rights Act, the Persons with Disabilities Act, and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act as legal frameworks designed to protect vulnerable individuals.

“These laws mandate strict safeguards for minors and persons with special needs,” she added.

She further directed that all orphanages and children’s homes operating in Rivers State must be duly registered to ensure full compliance with child protection protocols.

Responding, Chibuzor Chinyere admitted lapses in his approach, saying the development had served as a learning moment.

“This meeting is an eye-opener. I have been doing things without knowing that they were wrong. Now I understand better,” he said.
