Police Deploy More Officers After Ikire Killing
The Osun State Police Command has deployed more officers to Ikire and its environs following the recent political violence that led to the death of Osun Accord Women leader’s son, Kolade Eluyera, in the area.
The Osun Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed this to OSUN DEFENDER during a telephone interview yesterday.
He said, “Osun is relatively peaceful for now aside from what happened in Ikire the last time. Though, the Commissioner of Police in the state has deployed more officers to curb further violence. We are on top of the situation.”
Eluyera was reportedly murdered on Friday near Onireke Mosque in Ikire by political thugs seeking to silence his mother because of her popularity within the party, according to Accord national leadership.
In a statement issued by the National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbuden, he described the incident as “gruesome,” “barbaric,” and politically motivated.
He said, “It is outrageous and barbaric that a young man would be murdered by political thugs to silence his mother, who is a popular Accord woman leader in Irewole Local Government of the state.”
The party said it was devastated by the killing, insisting that Eluyera’s “only offence was being a member of Accord,” which it described as his constitutional right to freedom of association.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of his family, trusting God to console, comfort, and strengthen them in this trying time.
“Certainly, his death will not be in vain. Kolade Eluyera has paid the supreme price in our collective quest for a better, greater and prosperous Osun State,” the party added.
Accord demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind the killing and their alleged sponsors, urging security agencies to ensure the safety of residents during the electoral season.
