2027: PDP to Screen Jonathan As Sole Presidential Aspirant Tuesday
Former President Goodluck Jonathan is set to be screened on Tuesday as the sole presidential aspirant of the factional Peoples Democratic Party led by Tanimu Turaki ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party constituted a 14-member screening committee for the exercise, with former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State governor Jonah Jang and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi among members.
Other members of the committee include Chief Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Dr Abdul Bulama, Dr Esther Uduehi, Edo State PDP chairman Tony Aziegbemi, Dr Sunday Solarium and Chief Anicho Okoro, who will serve as administrative secretary.
Although the PDP statement only referred to “a lone presidential aspirant,” findings by THISDAY confirmed that Jonathan is the sole aspirant scheduled for screening.
Last week, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, disclosed that Jonathan had successfully registered as a member of the party during its fresh digital registration exercise directed by Independent National Electoral Commission.
The PDP faction backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also announced plans to screen 748 House of Representatives aspirants, 198 senatorial aspirants and 112 governorship aspirants.
According to the party, 2,122 aspirants for state Houses of Assembly will also undergo screening in various states beginning Tuesday.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Sunday, the party said the nationwide screening exercise would commence on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, by 10:00 a.m.
The Interim National Working Committee also released the names of members appointed to serve on the Screening Committees and Screening Appeal Panels.
The party stated that the release of the screening details was in line with its guidelines and timetable for the conduct of the 2027 general elections.
