Just In: Court Grants El-Rufai N100m Bail
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the sum of ₦100 million with one surety in like sum, while imposing strict conditions for the perfection of the bail.
The Department of State Services (DSS) had arraigned the former Governor of Kaduna State on a five-count amended charge bordering on an alleged breach of national security.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Abdulmalik ordered that the surety for El-Rufai must be a resident of either Maitama or Asokoro districts in Abuja and must deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property with the court registry.
The court further held that the surety must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17 and provide evidence of salary payments for at least three months. The salary evidence must also be authenticated through a letter issued by a bank manager within the jurisdiction of the court.
In addition, the surety is expected to depose to an affidavit of means, enter into a bail bond, and submit a recent passport photograph to the court registry.
As part of the conditions attached to the bail, El-Rufai was directed to surrender all valid international passports to the court registry pending the determination of the case.
Justice Abdulmalik also ordered the submission of a verification letter from the surety’s immediate department, alongside a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months.
The court further directed the former governor to report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) every last Friday of the month by 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register until the matter is concluded.
The judge warned that any failure to comply with the conditions would result in the automatic revocation of the bail.
The court additionally ordered El-Rufai to submit a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council.
