An Islamic organisation, Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative, has called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the alleged violent attack in Oluponna community in Ayedire Local Government Area of Osun State.

In a statement by its Director-General, Tadese S.A, the group said the attack occurred on Tuesday, May 26, with three people sustaining severe injuries.

Tadese said a man in the area allegedly led a violent attack within the community, thereby causing panic, fear, and serious injuries to innocent residents.

He added that one Mr Tijani Olaniyi, the son of the Baale of Station Area was attacked with a cutlass and sustained severe injuries on his head.

“Reports further indicate that Mr Tijani’s son and a female garri seller were also attacked and injured during the unfortunate incident.

“The attack has thrown residents of the area into fear and tension, as community members now express serious concern over the safety of lives and properties within Oluponna and its environs. No community should be subjected to violence, intimidation, or lawlessness by any individual or group,” the statement noted.

Tadese urged the Nigeria Police Force to conduct an immediate, thorough, and impartial investigation into the incident.

“Ensure the arrest and prosecution of all persons found culpable in connection with the attack, provide adequate security within the Oluponna community to prevent any further breakdown of law and order and ensure justice for all victims affected by the incident.”

The group also urge residents of the community to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding while allowing security agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
