“She Was After Governorship Ticket” — Ogun APC Dismisses Iyabo Obasanjo’s Maltreatment Claim
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has dismissed allegations of intimidation and ill-treatment made by former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, saying her claims did not reflect her actual experience in the party.
Iyabo, who represented Ogun Central in the Senate, announced her resignation from the APC on May 31, citing alleged disrespect, intimidation of her supporters and other grievances.
She had joined the party only a few months earlier and showed interest in its governorship ticket before later stepping down her ambition following a consensus arrangement within the party.
In a statement on Tuesday, the APC Publicity Secretary in Ogun, Femi Nuberu, said the claims in her resignation letter were inconsistent with the treatment she received, insisting she was neither sidelined nor intimidated.
According to him, she was given equal opportunities throughout the process, adding that the party remained committed to internal democracy and respected members’ right to make political choices.
He said: “The process remained transparent, inclusive and free from discrimination. Senator Obasanjo enjoyed the same rights, privileges and opportunities available to every other aspirant.”
The party further argued that her exit shortly after joining suggested her membership was largely driven by interest in the governorship ticket rather than loyalty to the party’s ideology.
It added that several aspirants who did not emerge successful in internal contests had remained in the party and continued to support its activities.
The APC maintained that politics requires patience, loyalty and sacrifice, noting that internal contests naturally produce winners and losers.
It also challenged aspects of her claims, stating that parts of the governorship selection process were still ongoing at the time she resigned.
While wishing her well in her future political engagements, the party reaffirmed its commitment to unity, inclusiveness and electoral success in Ogun State.
