Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has directed personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to refrain from unauthorised social media activities capable of tarnishing the image, integrity and professionalism of the force.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Anietie Edem, following concerns over the increasing trend of police officers creating videos, hosting live sessions and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform without official approval.

According to the statement, serving officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content while wearing police uniforms, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their position for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial purposes.

Edem said Disu acknowledged the importance of social media as a tool for communication and public engagement but stressed that its use by serving officers must comply with existing laws, regulations and the force’s social media policy.

The IGP directed Commissioners of Police, heads of departments, commanders and other supervisory officers to sensitise personnel under their commands and ensure strict adherence to the directive.

He also ordered the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers engaging in activities that fall short of the force’s professional standards.

Disu warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take disciplinary action against erring personnel within their commands.
