The African Action Congress (AAC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his directive banning staff of the FCT Administration from using mobile phones during office hours.

In a statement signed by the FCT AAC Chairman, Agena Robert Ande, and Secretary, Salako Kayode, the party described the ban as “draconian,” “egregious,” and “a gross affront to democracy.”

“The African Action Congress (AAC) FCT Chapter is appalled by the draconian directive issued by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, imposing a blanket ban on the use of mobile phones by staff of the FCT Administration,” the statement read.

The party said the order was an attempt to muzzle the voices of public servants and stifle their right to communicate, describing it as a manifestation of authoritarianism and contempt for democratic principles.

According to the AAC, Wike’s decision shows “disrespect for the Nigerian civil service and a desire to reduce FCT workers to servitude.”

“We unequivocally condemn this blatant attempt to strip FCT workers of their basic human rights and dignity. The notion that public servants can be treated as bonded labourers, forbidden from exercising their constitutional right to freedom of expression, has no place in modern Nigeria,” the party added.

Warning that “Nigeria is not a banana republic,” the AAC accused Wike of arrogance and abuse of power, saying his actions have become a hallmark of his administration.

“Wike’s propensity for insults, abuses, and false narratives against Nigerians is a matter of public record, and it is imperative that he is held accountable for his actions,” the statement continued.

The party said Wike’s disregard for democratic norms was unacceptable and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sack him immediately, insisting that his continued stay in office poses a threat to democracy.

Reaffirming its commitment to socialist and democratic ideals, the AAC vowed to resist any attempt to suppress civil servants’ rights or silence dissent within the FCT Administration.

“We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in condemning Wike’s actions and demanding accountability from this government,” the statement concluded.
