Accident: Group Calls For Adequate Traffic Coordination On Osogbo-Iwo Road

A human-rights organisation, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Osun State branch, has called on the state Ministry of Transport to urgently mobilise a traffic coordination team to the Dele Yes Sir end of the Osogbo-Iwo road, in Osogbo.

According to the CDHR, in a letter sent to the ministry, the call became necessary following the incessant occurrence of accidents on the road.

The group said putting a team to direct traffic on the road will mitigate frequent accidents in the area.

OSUN DEFENDER learnt that a turning point has been made towards the Onibueja area, but the motorists would not make use of it, in response to one-way traffic.

CDHR, in a statement by its Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Olowu, implored the state government to explore additional measures such as increased signage and public awareness campaigns to prevent accidents on the road.

Olowu, in a statement on Wednesday, said: “We write to urgently inform you of a need for a massive traffic coordinating team on Dele Yes Sir, Osogbo-Iwo Road, regarding the ongoing road rehabilitation.

“Motorists trying to avoid the turning point have resorted to one-way driving practice which is causing accidents on the road.

“The reckless behaviour of some drivers has led to numerous accidents, endangering the lives of both motorists and pedestrians. The situation demands immediate action to prevent further loss of life and damage to property.

“We urge you to take decisive measures to address this pressing issue. Specifically, we call upon your office to ensure that security agents are deployed to the area to enforce traffic reandions, which traffic abusers should be prosecuted when apprehended.

“Furthermore, we implore you to explore admeasures, measures such as increased signage, and public awareness campaigns, to promote safe driving practices to mitigate the risk of accidents as the project are ongoing.
