ADC Blasts APC Over ‘Heaven Will Not Fall’ Remark

The Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has criticised the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress for what it described as a dismissive response to opposition concerns ahead of upcoming elections, warning that such remarks could weaken democratic inclusion.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the Lagos APC had stated Nigeria’s democracy would not be undermined if the ADC and other parties failed to appear on the ballot.

Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, insisted that while political pluralism is important, the electoral process must strictly follow established laws and procedures.

He further accused the ADC of internal “disorder” and “procedural recklessness,” claiming these issues had undermined the party’s credibility.

Reacting on Tuesday, Lagos ADC, through Olusegun Adekayero, described Oladejo’s comment suggesting “heaven will not fall” over opposition concerns as troubling and reflective of the ruling party’s dismissive attitude toward political plurality.

Adekayero said it was “misleading and irresponsible” for the APC to trivialise matters relating to transparency, fairness, and administrative consistency in elections.

He insisted the ADC had consistently adhered to rules set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The opposition party accused the APC of double standards, recalling instances where the ruling party had faced exclusion from contests in states like Zamfara and Rivers due to legal disputes.

“Raising concerns about procedural ambiguities or potential bias should not be seen as a weakness but as safeguarding democracy,” Adekayero said.

He added that the ADC would continue to pursue lawful measures to ensure its candidates and supporters are not unjustly excluded, warning against rhetoric aimed at silencing opposition voices.

The party called on INEC to uphold neutrality, transparency, and fairness and urged the APC to adopt a constructive approach in strengthening democratic institutions rather than dismissing opposition concerns.
