The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed comments by Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, that the opposition coalition is deceiving Nigerians, stressing that Peter Obi is fully committed to the alliance.

Baba-Ahmed, in a Channels Television interview, alleged that the coalition was misleading the public and also disclosed his interest to run with Obi in 2027.

Reacting in a statement on Saturday, Jackie Wayas, ADC deputy national publicity secretary, said Baba-Ahmed’s remarks were his personal opinion and not the position of the coalition.

“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has always stood for integrity and justice, and since the coalition is a collective effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” Wayas said.

She explained that the coalition was formed after wide consultations with key leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, former Senate President David Mark, former Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi.

Wayas noted that Obi had already declared his dedication to the coalition and the adoption of ADC as the platform for the 2027 elections.

“In a public statement on July 3, 2025, Mr Obi declared and I quote: ‘Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections… Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first’,” she said.

She added that the coalition stands for national interest above party divides and remains focused on uniting the opposition to rescue the country from hardship.

“Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria,” Wayas concluded.
