ADC Warns APC Against Alleged Plot to Hijack Party Structures in Enugu

The Enugu State Chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to hijack and destabilise the party’s structures in the state.

In a communiqué jointly issued by all 17 Local Government Party Chairmen, members of the State Working Committee (SWC) and the three Senatorial Zonal Chairmen, the ADC said it “unequivocally condemns, firmly rejects and completely dissociates” itself from individuals it identified as non-members who are allegedly trying to seize control of the party.

The party disclosed that it received “credible and deeply disturbing intelligence” indicating that certain persons, who are neither registered ADC members nor recognised coalition partners, have been holding private meetings while “falsely parading themselves as party leaders and arrogating powers to themselves which they do not possess under the ADC Constitution.”

According to the ADC, these actions are reportedly being orchestrated under the influence of coalition leadership in the state, with the ultimate aim of delivering the party to the APC—“a destructive agenda reminiscent of the unfortunate takeover and near-collapse of the Labour Party.”

The party also expressed concern over reports of illegal zoning and allocation of positions by these external elements, describing such acts as a “gross violation of party rules, internal democracy and coalition principles.”

A particularly troubling development was said to have occurred in the Enugu East Senatorial Zone, where positions were allegedly zoned without involving the recognised coalition leader in the zone, Senator Gilbert Nnaji.

The ADC noted that even the State Chairman was “completely unaware of such purported arrangements,” describing the situation as a reckless disregard for party hierarchy.

The communiqué insisted that “you cannot shave a man’s head in his absence,” adding that any decisions taken outside the participation of legitimate ADC leadership are “null, void and of no effect whatsoever.”

The party warned it would not recognise any arrangement initiated by non-members or by individuals who have not formally resigned from other political parties.

It cautioned against attempts to use the ADC as a proxy platform to further APC interests in Enugu State.

“The ADC in Enugu State is not for sale, will not be hijacked and will never be compromised by individuals whose political allegiance lies elsewhere,” the party stated.

Emphasising discipline, ideology, and respect for due process, the ADC appealed to the national leadership to intervene and ensure compliance with the party constitution to protect its structures in the state.

Reaffirming unity among members, the party pledged to build a “strong, credible and people-oriented opposition” that reflects the democratic aspirations of Enugu residents.
