Adepoju Praises Super Eagles On Victory

A Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has praised the national team for successfully stopping Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski from scoring during their 1-0 win over Poland in an international friendly in Wroclaw on Friday.

Poland’s top scorer Lewandowski was europe’s highest scorer in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and had netted nine goals in his last six matches for the national team prior to Friday’s friendly against Nigeria.

But the Eagles defence led by William Troost-Ekong, who captained the side, held on against the dangerous marksman, who was substituted in the 66th minute.

“The Eagles did a great job on Robert. Even though he hit the post and had a one-on-one with the Nigerian keeper, he was unable to score. The boys did well playing against such a reputable striker,” Adepoju said.

The 1994 AFCON winner is also delighted with the overall form of the Eagles despite the physical approach of the hosts during the World Cup build-up tie on Friday.

“It was a nice game. We were able to control the game even though it wasn’t easy for the team in the early stages. I think we are getting it right but they shouldn’t think everything is okay; all matches are different. They have to take the preparation step by step.”

Also, ex-Eagles assistant coach Lawrence Akpokona hailed Gernot Rohr’s side for the result.

He said, “It was a good result, though I think that team wasn’t the best we could present. So, I give the boys credit. The Polish were bullying our boys; they were very aggressive and I think the referee didn’t protect our players enough especially Victor Moses. They knew the harm he could cause and they kicked him everywhere on the pitch.
