AFCON: Nigeria To Face Cameroon As Ghana Sack Coach After Early Exit

Nigeria Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the Round of 16 of the ongoing African Cup of Nations on Saturday.

The three-time African champion will meet the Cameroonians after the five-time winner round off their group stage with a pulsating 3-2 victory over the Gambia on Tuesday night.

Cameroon finished with four points in Group C while Guinea who lost to the Teranga Lions also on Tuesday qualified for the knockout as one of the best losers.

Super Eagles reached the knockout stage after beating Guinea Bissau 1-0 on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has sacked coach Chris Hughton with immediate effect following the country’s early exit from the AFCON.

The sacking was made known in a statement posted on the GFA website.

The statement reads, “The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.

“The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

The Black Stars did not win against Egypt, lost to Cape Verde and could not keep a two-goal lead against Mozambique as they were shown the exit door out of the tournament that has continued to throw up surprises.
