AFCON: Rohr Plans Tactical Change Against Bafana Bafana

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, is torn between deploying a 3-5-2 or sticking to his preferred 4-3-3 formation when his side clash with South Africa in Wednesday’s quarter-final clash at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Sports Extra has gathered.

The German tactician has been trying out these two formations in their training sessions in Cairo but he seems to prefer a 3-5-2 as it offers the team more solidity at the back and enough men to curtail the pacy Bafana Bafana players a camp source revealed to Sports Extra in a chat.

“He (Rohr) has been trying out several systems in training but we don’t know which one he will settle for,” a camp source told Sports Extra.

“But he has laid more emphasis on it (3-5-2) so well. But it’s either the 3-5-2 or he reverts back to a 4-3-3.”

In training, William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Leon Balogun were the three defenders

While in midfield, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo and Alex Iwobi were flanked by Ola Aina and Moses Simon, who played as wing-backs.

In attack Ahmed Musa played off Odion Ighalo.

The Eagles will be well used to the 3-5-2 formation as it was the preferred set up at 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The three-time AFCON winners also deployed the 3-5-2 formation against South Africa in an AFCON qualifier at the FNB stadium last year, which ended 1-1.

Meanwhile, the Eagles arrived Cairo on Monday ahead of their quarter-final clash against South Africa and are lodged at the Airport Le Meridien Hotel. The Airport Le Meridien Hotel is 20 minutes away from the Cairo International Stadium, venue of the match.

Sports Extra gathered that the Eagles trained on Monday in Cairo ahead of the encounter on Wednesday.

They will hold their last training session on Tuesday (today).
