African’s living in a city in India have been under attack since yesterday 27th March 2017, over the death of a local teenager. 5 African students where arrested for the murder of the teen. The suspects were accused of cannibalism and the apartment of the accused was searched with no evidence. The body of the teen was later found, leading to the release of the 5 suspects.
The release of the Africans lead to an uproar of the locals causing them to attack Africans in the city. Several videos and pictures have been posted online since last night. Reports states that the teen died of a drug overdose.
One television station showed an angry mob hitting a car with sticks, while another showed dozens of attackers using steel chairs to hit shoppers in a mall. Local police said 10 people had been wounded, while India’s foreign minister said authorities were investigating the attacks. “There will be a fair and impartial investigation into this unfortunate incident,” Sushma Swaraj tweeted.
Africans living in India frequently face discrimination and even violence, and are often accused of involvement in the illegal drug trade.
