Aggrieved Yoruba Imams Part Ways With Sultan, Declare Date To Commence Ramadan

In what appears to be a bold departure from tradition, the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has unilaterally declared Saturday, March 1, 2025, as the official commencement date for Ramadan 1446 AH, disregarding the usual announcement from the Sultan of Sokoto, who is regarded as the spiritual head of Nigerian Muslims.
The decision, conveyed in a communiqué issued by the Office of the Grand Mufti of the League, was based on precise astronomical calculations and resolutions from international Islamic jurisprudential councils.
The statement referenced Islamic conferences in Istanbul, Paris, and within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which affirmed that the crescent moon would be visible after sunset on Friday, February 28, 2025.
Quoting a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the League asserted its right to determine the start of Ramadan, marking a significant shift from the long-standing practice in Nigeria, where the Sultan traditionally makes such proclamations.

The move is expected to deepen ongoing debates about religious autonomy among Yoruba Muslims, many of whom have expressed concerns over northern dominance in Islamic affairs.
This development follows recent tensions sparked by the Sultan’s call for the implementation of Sharia law in Yorubaland, a statement that the Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Movement described as “disrespectful.”
The group, led by Professor Banji Akintoye, has consistently argued that Yoruba Muslims are not religiously bound to accept the authority of the Sultan.
As of press time, the Sultan of Sokoto and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) have yet to respond to the Yoruba Imams’ independent declaration.
However, the League has reiterated its stance, urging Yoruba Muslims to abide by their announcement and prepare for fasting to begin on March 1, 2025.
