Human rights activist and politician, Aisha Yesufu, has withdrawn from the Federal Capital Territory senatorial race under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the party’s decision not to conduct primaries for the seat.

Yesufu had earlier declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat on the platform of the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

She had recently stepped up political consultations and grassroots mobilisation across the six area councils of the FCT in pursuit of the ambition.

In a statement shared on her X handle on Friday, she informed supporters that the party had resolved not to hold primaries for the senatorial seat in Abuja.

She added that the party would, however, proceed with primaries for House of Representatives positions.

“Dear supporters, our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja,” she wrote.

“It however intends to conduct primaries for the House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!”

Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and focus on what she described as the bigger political goal, particularly the presidential election.

She also expressed appreciation for the support she received during her mobilisation across the FCT area councils.

“Nigeria will be OK!” she said.

“I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards #AishaForSenate project.”

She further disclosed plans to return to the six area councils to appreciate supporters and continue engagement.

The development comes amid unconfirmed reports that the party had reached a consensus on another candidate, Amanda Pam, for the FCT senatorial ticket.

The NDC has, however, not officially confirmed or denied the rumour.

Meanwhile, a viral video showed party members visiting the Abuja residence of NDC leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, in the early hours of Friday over concerns about alleged “anointed candidates.”

Dickson reportedly urged the aggrieved members to proceed to the primary election venue, insisting that the party had no anointed candidates for the House of Representatives.

However, when asked about the Senate ticket, he was heard saying, “That Senate, don’t go there,” before directing them to the primaries venue.
