Akande Calls For Review Of Federal Functions, Allocation

The first Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Adebisi Akande has called for the review of salient national resources sharing formula as well as revenue to aid the nation’s gradual exit from its myriad of challenges. According to Akande, it is necessary to recognise the federating units as the real channels of driving governance to make meaningful impact in the land.

 

Akande said to ameliorate the country’s multi-faceted problems, the fiscal sharing formula must be reviewed to ensure that more funds are taken to the federating units where real governance takes place.

 

The Elder Statesman in his goodwill message to the Southwest Development Summit of the Yoruba Patriots Movement on Tuesday noted that for greater prosperity to thrive, the Federal Government must largely off-load some of its responsibilities to the federating units.

 

He also canvassed for the use of Scientific Technology in making the country’s census more accurate as a panacea to the Nation’s retrogressive Progress.

 

The former governor of Osun state said: “Scientific technology must be used to ensure that our future population censuses are made accurate.

 

“Our zones/regions in their amicable variants must be recognised as the first-line federating units. The exclusive functions of the Federal Government must be largely off-loaded and shared among the federating units.

 

“Revenue allocation system must be related to tax efforts and the quantum and complexity of functions assigned to each tier of government. The present formula for allocating revenue among the 774 local governments directly from Abuja must be discarded and replaced with a more equitable formula which could encourage allocation to local governments by their States according to the dictates of their different Houses of Assembly.”
