Akinlalu: Osun Govt Orders Full Probe Into Killings, Dispatches Delegation To Scene
Osun State Government has ordered a full-scale investigation into the killings in Akinlalu, Ife North Local Government Area, involving operatives of the Amotekun Corps.
The government also dispatched a high-powered delegation to the community to ascertain the facts of the incident.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, said he received the news of the deaths with “deep shock” and expressed “heartfelt condolences” to the affected families and the people of Akinlalu.
“I am deeply saddened by the deaths of some individuals from Akinlalu.
“After receiving a preliminary report from my Special Adviser on Security Matters, I immediately directed further investigations and ordered a security council meeting to deliberate on the issue.”
According to the statement, the governor has instructed that the State Security Council convene on Monday to discuss the incident and other emerging security threats across the state, including fears of spillover from recent banditry attacks in Kwara State.
“I am a rule of law Governor,” Adeleke stated firmly. “This matter is being investigated and any infraction will be dealt with within the context of the law.”
The statement disclosed that a government delegation, comprising key officials and service chiefs, will visit Akinlalu after the Security Council meeting. Those expected on the team include the Special Adviser on Security Matters, the Commissioner for Information, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, the Commissioner for Transportation, the Attorney General of the State, the Special Adviser on Legal Matters, and heads of various security agencies.
Governor Adeleke urged residents of the town to remain calm and allow the investigation process to take its full course.
“I send my condolences to the victims of this unfortunate incident. I urge the good people of Akinlalu to keep calm as our government acts on the matter. I feel their pains, but investigations are ongoing.
“Our government will not tolerate any act of recklessness from any security agency. We are determined to dig into the root of this fatal encounter and ensure justice is done,” the statement added.
- Akinlalu Killings Represent Grave Abuse Of Authority – Omoluabi Progressives
Meanwhile, Omoluabi Progressives have condemned what they described as the “reckless shooting” by Amotekun operatives in Akinlalu, saying the incident represents a grave abuse of authority and a tragic failure of state security oversight.
In a statement signed by its Publicity and Organizing Secretary, Abosede Busayo Oluwaseun on Saturday, the group said it received the news of the killings “with deep pain and grave concern,” accusing the Amotekun Corps of “lawlessness and lack of professional restraint.”
“It is most disheartening that the Amotekun security outfit, established to safeguard lives and property, could descend into such a level of indiscriminate violence against the very citizens it is meant to defend,” the group said.
The group held the state government directly responsible for the conduct of the operatives and demanded immediate and transparent action to bring those involved to justice.
It also expressed sympathy for victims and families affected by the violence, particularly the case of a family that reportedly lost three children to the incident, describing it as “calamitous by any standard.”
The Omoluabi Progressives further demanded that victims of the attack be compensated and those injured be properly treated.
“We hold the Osun State Government, under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke, directly responsible for the misconduct of its employees.
“We therefore call on the government to immediately caution its Amotekun operatives, investigate this heinous incident, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones, the injured, and all residents who have been thrown into fear and mourning,” the statement added. “May God grant the departed eternal rest, comfort the bereaved, and heal the wounded hearts.
“Those who are receiving treatment in hospitals must be given the best medical care; families whose property were destroyed and looted by the rampaging operatives must be adequately compensated; and, most importantly, the perpetrators of this heinous act must be identified, prosecuted, and brought to book without delay,” the political organisation stated.
