Akpabio: Tension At National Assembly Amidst Impeachment Rumours

The atmosphere at Nigeria’s National Assembly was tense on Wednesday morning, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stationed at key entrances, fueling speculation of an impending impeachment move against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
DSS officers in dark suits and shades were observed manning all access points, raising concerns over heightened security and a possible political showdown.
This development follows recent reports suggesting that a group of aggrieved Northern Senators, reportedly dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, might be behind a renewed effort to unseat Akpabio.
The presence of DSS operatives has led to speculation that the security apparatus is on high alert due to this brewing tension.
Traditionally, security within the precincts of Parliament is managed by internal forces, but external agencies such as the DSS are deployed in the case of significant threats or potential breaches.
Amid the mounting rumors, prominent religious leader Primate Elijah Ayodele, head of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a stark warning to Akpabio, suggesting that his leadership may be sowing division within the Senate.
In a video posted on social media, Ayodele criticized Akpabio’s public statements, which he claimed were causing internal unrest and damaging the Senate’s reputation.
The cleric warned that Akpabio’s alleged incompetence might lead to increased disunity among lawmakers, culminating in efforts to remove him from office.

He also hinted that a “rowdy session” might ensue, disrupting Senate proceedings and further straining relations between members.

Despite the escalating speculation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio took to the Senate floor to dismiss reports that the DSS had taken over the National Assembly to thwart an impeachment plot.
Referring to the reports as “fake news,” Akpabio suggested that the story was fabricated by individuals seeking to drive traffic to their websites.
He humorously remarked that social media had no bounds and reassured his colleagues that the Senate was continuing its work without disruption.
The Senate President even proposed referring the issue to the special duties committee for investigation, emphasising that the claims were baseless and intended to mislead the public.
