Amnesty International Decries Attacks on Peaceful Protesters in Abuja, Others
Amnesty International has condemned the actions of Nigerian security forces following their crackdown on peaceful protesters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Abuja, and Damaturu, Yobe State.
This comes after reports of police officers firing teargas at demonstrators in Port Harcourt, on Monday.
The protesters, part of the Take It Back (TIB) Movement, were advocating against oppressive laws and political unrest in Rivers State.
Despite notifying the police of their peaceful intentions, they were met with violence, alongside journalists who were also targeted.
The protest was also held in other cities such as Lagos and Ibadan.
Amnesty International expressed its concern statement on X on Monday “Amnesty International is deeply concerned by security forces’ attacks on protesters in Abuja and Port Harcourt.”
It further added, “Protesters and journalists were beaten in Port Harcourt. In Damaturu Yobe state 4 activists have been unlawfully arrested. These atrocities are unacceptable & must be investigated.”
