Amnesty International Slams FG Over Benue Massacre
Amnesty International has condemned the killing of over 100 people in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, accusing the Federal Government of failing to curb the violence in the region.
The attack, which occurred between late Friday and the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, saw gunmen invade the community, killing scores and injuring several others.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Amnesty International described the government’s response as “ineffective and insufficient,” asserting that the attack exposed the failure of security measures in the state.
“The horrifying killing of over 100 people by gunmen that invaded Yelewata shows the security measures government claims to be implementing in the state are not working,” the group stated.
The organisation said it gathered from eyewitnesses that some victims were burnt alive in their homes, while many injured residents are still struggling to access medical treatment.
“Amnesty International has been documenting the alarming escalation of attacks across Benue State where gunmen have been on a killing spree with utter impunity,” the statement continued.
It added that the persistent violence is not only claiming lives but also displacing communities and threatening food security, as many of the victims are farmers.
“The continued violence in Benue is forcing people to flee their homes and may lead to food shortages since many of the victims are farmers,” the group warned.
Amnesty called on Nigerian authorities to act swiftly to halt the killings, protect civilians, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The Nigerian authorities’ failure to stem the violence is costing people’s lives and livelihoods, and without immediate action, many more lives may be lost,” it said.
