Six newly recruited operatives of the Ogun State Security Network Agency, otherwise known as the Amotekun Corps, have been dismissed after it was discovered they were pregnant during their mandatory training exercise.

The development comes barely four months after Governor Dapo Abiodun approved the recruitment of an additional 500 officers into the corps, in a move aimed at strengthening the state’s security architecture.

The Commander of the Amotekun Corps in Ogun, Mr Alade Adedigba, disclosed the dismissal in a statement issued on Thursday, stressing that the action was taken in the interest of professionalism and to safeguard the health of the affected officers.

Adedigba said the corps discovered the pregnancies through routine medical examinations conducted during a three-week intensive training programme for the new intakes.

He noted that the affected women were already pregnant before joining the corps, thereby making them unfit for the physically demanding nature of the training.

“In a bold move to prioritise the well-being and safeguard the health of its recruits, the Ogun State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, has dismissed six female recruits from its training camp for being pregnant before joining the agency,” the statement read in part.

He explained that the training being administered to the new operatives was rigorous and intense, adding that it was not suitable for persons in such conditions due to the risk of miscarriage, deformity, or other health complications.

“The difficult but necessary decision is therefore taken in conformity with our usual practice of providing a safe and secure environment for our recruits, and this move aligns with our broader mission of public safety and health,” he added.

Despite the dismissal, Adedigba commended the determination and patriotism exhibited by the affected recruits, assuring them that they would be welcomed back into the corps in future recruitment exercises once they are fit to undergo the training.

“We appreciate their willingness to step forward and join our ranks; however, we must also ensure their health and the health of their children are not compromised.

“As they prepare for their new journeys into motherhood, we assure them that their commitment to serve is commendable, and they will have the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations in our future recruitment process, when they return stronger after delivery,” the corps commander stated.
