Anambra Assembly Summons Member For Exposing Alleged Diversion of Funds

The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, Hon Bernard Udemezue, for exposing details of how lawmakers allegedly divert funds meant for public use.

Udemezue, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker in an All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) dominated House, had shared on social media that members collect constituency allowances but pocket them instead of using the money for projects.

He revealed that each lawmaker receives N7.5 million quarterly, which was later increased to N10 million, insisting the money was meant for the people and not for personal enrichment.

Following a motion of urgent public importance raised by Hon Tony Muobike of Aguata II Constituency during plenary in Awka, the House resolved to summon Udemezue, accusing him of damaging its reputation and endangering members’ safety through his posts.

Reacting to the summon, Udemezue said, “Yes, I posted something on social media. That was my constituency’s empowerment fund and my overhead allowance. I did so because before the election, I promised my people that I would be transparent.

“I told them plainly that every three months, I get N7.5 million from government for them and it was later increased to N10 million. But my colleagues are not happy that I revealed this. None of them are using the money for the people, they keep it to themselves.”

The lawmaker further stated that the Assembly is unpopular because it has failed in its core duties of lawmaking, representation and oversight.

He maintained he had no regrets and was not afraid of the backlash.

Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over plenary, referred the matter to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, with a directive to report back next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the revelation has sparked public debate, with some accusing lawmakers of misleading the public into believing Governor Chukwuma Soludo was underfunding the Assembly.
