Tension has heightened ahead of the November 8 Anambra State governorship election as gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted six passengers, including three staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), along the Kogi highway.

According to SaharaReporters, it was revealed that the victims were travelling from Abuja to Anambra when their Sienna minibus was ambushed at Aloma, a community near the Kogi–Benue border.

The abducted INEC officials were identified as Chinenye Orji, Adamaka Anih, and Catherine Temaugee, who were reportedly en route to perform election-related duties, including the printing of voters’ registers and other essential materials for the forthcoming poll.

According to sources who spoke with SaharaReporters, the kidnappers laid siege on the road, firing shots that shattered the vehicle’s windshield. The driver of the bus and an elderly woman managed to escape after the assailants realised the woman had mobility challenges.

“All the other passengers, including my wife and the INEC staff, were taken into the bush,” the driver recounted in a recorded phone call.

Eyewitnesses said the attack occurred shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, as the vehicle left the Utako Motor Park in Abuja earlier that morning.

The incident was promptly reported to the Aloma Police Division, but as of press time, the kidnappers had yet to make contact or demand ransom.
