A cleaner, Faiza Abdulkadir, who returned the sum of N4.8m mistakenly credited to her bank account, has been rewarded with N2.5m by a benevolent Nigerian who preferred to remain anonymous.

The president of the Da’awah Wal Irshaad Women Organisation in Borno State, Aisha Muhammad Aisami, presented the cheque to Faiza in Maiduguri on Monday.

She explained that the donor had read about the woman’s act of honesty in Daily Trust newspaper and immediately reached out to the organisation to trace her.

“We therefore present this cheque of N2.5m to Faiza Abdulkadir on behalf of our donor, who saw what she did when somebody mistakenly sent N4.8m into her account and she returned it,” Aisami said.

According to her, the donor was not from Borno State but decided to extend the reward solely based on Faiza’s uncommon integrity.

“May Allah make her steadfast in what she did and reward the donor and all those who contributed to her,” she added.

Faiza, who works as a cleaner at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and earns N30,000 monthly, expressed gratitude to the anonymous donor and the organisation.

She also urged Nigerians to always fear God and resist the temptation of unlawful gains.

“If you fear God, anything that doesn’t belong to you would not attract you. We should always prepare for the hereafter and not be deceived by worldly gains that are temporary,” she said.

Earlier, the Borno State First Lady, Dr Falmata Babagana Zulum, had also presented Faiza with a N1m cash gift, food items and vocational skills equipment.

The state Commissioner of Women Affairs, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, described her decision as a rare display of honesty in the face of financial hardship.
Seven days earlier, Faiza, a mother of five and resident of Gwange in Maiduguri, had received the N4.8m alert from an unknown sender in Kebbi State.

Rather than spend it, she contacted the owner and went through a three-day process at the bank to return the funds.

“The money does not belong to me. I returned it to have peace of mind and avoid God’s punishment on the Day of Judgement,” she explained.
