Anxiety Ahead Governorship Election Tribunals Judgments In States And Other Newspaper Headlines Today

  • Sodiq Yusuf

With the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) through with its assignment last Wednesday, attention has now shifted to the Governorship Election Petition Tribunals in the states where incumbent governors are eagerly waiting to know their fate.

THE NATION reports that tension is already on the rise in the various states, with petitions in Ogun, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu, Nasarawa and Ebonyi attracting particular interest. Other states include Delta, Gombe, Sokoto and Akwa Ibom.

Most of the tribunals have reserved their judgments which may be delivered not later than next week, coming on the heels of the sack of some federal lawmakers in the last few days by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunals.

On THE PUNCH, the paper leads with a story noting that the camps of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar; and that of President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, clashed over the watermark on the copy of the judgment of the Presidential Elections Petition Court which went viral on Friday.

The viral copy of the Certified True Copy of the court’s judgment had the watermark of the Tinubu Presidential Legal Team on it, with commentators, especially social media users, suggesting a sinister motive.

The PEPC had on Wednesday delivered a 12-hour judgment on the appeals arising from the presidential election, upholding the election of the President who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Atiku and Peter Obi of the Labour Party had rejected the court’s judgment, vowing to approach the Supreme Court.

NIGERIAN TRIBUNE also has as its major focus the review of the 100 days in office of President Bola Tinubu. The paper says the first 100 days of President Bola Tinubu in office is a mixture of suspense and hope for the citizenry. It elicits mixed feelings among the people, due to the impact of his policies and body language. Just as most of his policies have left ripple effects in the economic spectrum, they have also created dizzying effects on the political environment.

From the choice of members of his cabinet to his intervention in some development within his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as rumbling in the three opposition parties that gave him a run for his money in the February 25 general election, the president remains the issue in the last 100 days.
