APC: Desmond Elliot Withdraws From Lagos House of Assembly Primaries
Lagos State lawmaker Desmond Elliot has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for Surulere 1 constituency in the House of Assembly, alleging intimidation of his supporters and restriction of access to the polling venue.
Elliot made the announcement on Wednesday at the Paddington mini stadium on Western Avenue, where the party primary was being held.
He said he had repeatedly appealed to electoral officers to allow his supporters into the venue, but his requests were ignored.
“And of course, in all zones, they’ve been intimidating and stopping us. I want to officially announce my withdrawal from this particular race. This is my ward. If you go outside, those are my people outside,” he said.
He further alleged that many of his supporters were denied entry into the polling area despite several appeals to election officials.
“They’ve not been allowed,” Elliot stated shortly before he stepped down from the contest.
Following his withdrawal, his supporters staged a peaceful protest before gradually exiting the venue alongside him.
“Good luck. Thank you, and God bless you,” he told party members as he left the election ground.
Elliot said he decided to withdraw in order to prevent any breakdown of law and order, stressing that no political ambition was worth the loss of lives.
He also called on the APC leadership to ensure a free and fair process in future primaries across the state.
