Appeal Court Fixes Date For Kano Governorship Election Hearing
The Appeal Court in Abuja has scheduled a hearing for Monday, October 6, 2023, to address Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s appeal regarding the annulment of his election.
This appeal follows Yusuf’s response to the nullification of his election by the Kano Election Petition Tribunal and the subsequent declaration of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), as the legitimate governor.
A three-member panel of judges, led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, delivered the verdict on September 20, 2023, which led to Yusuf’s removal.
The tribunal invalidated 165,663 of Yusuf’s votes, stating that they lacked the required signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Consequently, this reduced Governor Yusuf’s total votes to 853,939, which was 30,000 votes less than the 890,705 votes secured by Gawuna.
Subsequently, the court declared Gawuna, the APC candidate, as the victor of the gubernatorial election and instructed the INEC to withdraw Yusuf’s certificate.
In response to this ruling, Governor Yusuf expressed his discontent, describing the tribunal’s decision as “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice.”
