Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has advocated inclusion of community leaders in security and border management across the country.
The minister said this when he featured on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja that this would strengthen surveillance and effectiveness in border control.
He said that apart from the Federal agencies involved in border control and management, border communities also have the patriotic responsibility to insulate the country from cross-border criminals.
Aregbesola assured that the government was doing its best to check illegal transnational activities across Nigeria’s international borders.
According to him, “We are at it, we are mobilising our men to be at the boarder as we are improving on boarder surveillance amongst others.
“But that can’t be enough, I want Nigerians to really understand what it is that in terms of space we will be one of the first three big nations in Africa.
“What that tells you is that it is not possible for you to have enough men that will man every inch, centimetre or millimetre of the boarder line,” he said.
The minister, therefore, said that the involvement of border communities in security surveillance of the borders would help security agencies to execute their duties more effectively and efficiently.
“We are doing our best as far as our organ of border control is concerned as there is proper deployment and we are not relenting but moving forward,” Aregbesola said.
