Aregbesola Earns New Nickname

Former Governor of Osun State and immediate past Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has earned a new nickname: ‘Ijaya’, meaning “The Dreaded One.” This moniker, now widely used across Osun State, reflects Aregbesola’s enduring political influence and reputation as a fearless leader who commands both respect and caution.

Aregbesola, who served as Osun State Governor from 2010 to 2018, remains a towering figure in the state’s political landscape. Known for his bold policies, unapologetic style, and decisive leadership, he has built a legacy that continues to shape political discourse in Osun.

The nickname, ‘Ijaya’ reportedly emerged from political circles and quickly gained traction among supporters and opponents alike. It highlights his no-nonsense approach to governance and his role as a formidable force in Osun politics. For many, Aregbesola is seen as a protector of the people and a defender of their interests, often standing up against perceived injustices and challenging political adversaries head-on.

During his tenure as governor, Aregbesola initiated sweeping reforms in education, infrastructure, and security. His administration was marked by the construction of iconic projects, including mega schools, road networks, and the modernization of Osun’s urban centers. While some of his policies sparked controversy, they cemented his image as a leader who prioritizes progress over popularity.

His role as Minister of Interior further solidified his reputation. Aregbesola was instrumental in implementing security reforms, particularly in the areas of immigration and correctional services. His tenure was characterized by bold moves, including the digitalization of passport issuance and the decongestion of Nigeria’s correctional facilities.
