Tension gripped residents of Moremi Estate in Ile-Ife, Osun State, in the early hours of Monday following a violent robbery at D&D Hostel, where a Part 4 student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, was attacked and macheted by suspected armed robbers.
OSUN DEFENDER gathered that the incident, which occurred between 12:45am and 1:00am, is the third in a spate of robberies within the Moremi axis in recent weeks.
However, Monday’s attack has been described as the most brutal yet, leaving the victim with a deep machete cut to the head.
The injured student, a final year scholar from the Department of Material Science, was rushed to the hospital where he received treatment and was later discharged.
The hostel community has since been thrown into panic as students and residents express fear over the deteriorating security situation in the area.
Reacting to the development, the Director of Security and Project Delivery to the Office of the National Vice President (South-West) of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Comrade Olaore David , has launched a swift response to address the worsening insecurity.
Kolokolo, alongside the Chief Security Officer of the Great Ife Students’ Union, AbdulRoheem Arogundade paid a condolence visit to the hostel community.
They were accompanied by two police patrol vehicles and officers from both Moore and Modakeke Divisional Police Stations.
During the visit, the team met with the assaulted student and other hostel residents who gave first-hand accounts of the chilling incident.
Kolokolo assured the student community of ongoing efforts to restore calm and forestall a recurrence.
“We have commenced a joint surveillance operation with the police and other security operatives to uncover the escape routes and entry points being exploited by the criminals,” he said.
He also disclosed that a dedicated emergency contact line would be circulated in the coming days to ensure students can easily report suspicious movements or request immediate assistance in emergency situations.
