A football-related dispute has ended in the death of 22-year-old Benjamin Okello, a Manchester United supporter, following a heated argument with an Arsenal fan in Kyobugombe Trading Centre, Western Uganda.
It was gathered that the confrontation unfolded on Sunday, October 27th, during a viewing of Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
The argument reportedly began when Okello celebrated Liverpool’s equalizer, scored by Mo Salah in the 81st minute.
Witnesses at the scene told Daily Monitor that Okello threw popcorn at the Arsenal fan, identified only as Onan, as he jubilantly cheered for the goal. This action enraged the Arsenal supporter, leading to a verbal confrontation that escalated after the match concluded.
According to local sources, the altercation continued outside the video hall. Onan allegedly struck Okello with a stick, causing him to collapse.
Okello was rushed to Bukinda Health Centre for treatment and later referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Kaharo Sub County Chairperson confirmed the tragic incident to Daily Monitor, stating that he received information about the fatal altercation early Monday morning.
“Yesterday morning (Monday), two men fought on Sunday night in Kyobugombe trading centre. One of them was rushed to Bukinda Health Centre for treatment and was referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he died,” he said.

Mr. Joseph Bakaleke, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Kabale, revealed that authorities received reports of the incident and are now actively searching for the suspect, Onan.
Police described Onan as someone known for criminal activities in the area and appealed to the public for any information that could aid in his apprehension.
“We got information indicating that the two boys who were supporters of two different teams had a scuffle, and in so doing, one assaulted the other. It is alleged that the assaulted one was taken to the hospital, where he later passed away,” Bakaleke explained.
Okello’s family has since demanded justice, as authorities work to gather more information from witnesses to clarify the events that led to his death. Mr. Bakaleke urged the family and community to remain calm as police efforts to locate the suspect intensify.
“We have tried to encourage the relatives of the deceased to calm down as we continue to hunt for the suspect alleged to have participated in the fight, and we are gathering information from those present to aid in the investigation,” he added.
