The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Calabar Branch, has revealed that ten of its academic staff members had died since the ASUU strike began on February 14, 2022.
This was revealed by ASUU UNICAL Branch Chairman, Dr John Edor, on Thursday, while speaking with our correspondent in Calabar.
Although, Edor did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the death of the lecturers, some had blamed lack of funds to treat medical conditions, as the cause of their death.
Dr. Edor, however, disclosed the names of the lecturers and their courses taught.
The names listed are; Prof. E. O. Udosen, Biochemistry; Dr. Mrs. Iquo Takon, Microbiology; Prof. G. U. Ntamu, Religious and Cultural Studies; Prof. Mrs. Judith Otu, Sociology; Prof. Victor Ibianwu, Physics, Prof. Offiong Abia, History and International Studies; Prof. Catherine Agbor, Arts Education; Dr. Augustine Bassey, Sociology; Dr. Ita Esuabana, Mathematics and Dr. Chinyere Okam, Theatre and Media Studies.
OSUN DEFENDER reports that ASUU had commenced the strike to press home their demand for better welfare, amongst others and the federal government had withheld the salaries of the lecturers for the seven month period.
Asked to comment on the tragedy, Edor said, “I won’t make further comments.”
