Atiku Condemns Military Honours For Seyi Tinubu, Demands Probe

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the military honours accorded to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, describing the act as a desecration of Nigeria’s long-standing military traditions.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday by his media office and signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku called for a thorough investigation into what he termed a gross violation of military protocol.

Osun Defender reports that the controversy stems from a viral video showing Seyi Tinubu receiving a formal military parade from a group identified as the “Nigeria Cadet Network.”

Atiku argued that such honours are strictly reserved for public officials designated by law and warned against actions capable of undermining the sanctity of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“It is disturbing to see such a revered military tradition extended to a private citizen. This incident must not be swept under the carpet,” Atiku stated.

The former Vice President questioned the legitimacy of the group involved, stating that preliminary findings indicated that the “Nigeria Cadet Network” is not a recognised entity within the Nigerian military.

He also raised concerns over the use of firearms during the parade, particularly in a country grappling with the proliferation of illegal arms.

Atiku outlined three critical areas for investigation: the authenticity of the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” the legality of the firearms displayed during the parade, and the appropriateness of bestowing military honours on a private individual.

“The integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces is sacrosanct. If any laws have been broken, it is the duty of security agencies to ensure accountability,” he added.

The incident has sparked widespread public criticism, with many accusing the government of politicising military traditions.

Atiku emphasised that preserving the professionalism and integrity of the Armed Forces is vital to maintaining public trust.
