Attitude, Values, Institutions for Proper Functioning of Democracy Yet to Fully Mature in Nigeria — Bishop Kukah

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, has said that democracy remains the most preferable system of governance anywhere in the world, despite its challenges.

Bishop Kukah noted, however, that the attitudes, values, and institutions required for the proper functioning of democracy are yet to fully mature in Nigeria and some other parts of the world.

According to the cleric, there is a need to develop a deeper understanding of the principles that guide democratic governance in order to strengthen its practice and outcomes.

He lamented a situation where politicians repeatedly make promises of a better future that never materialise, leaving citizens in constant search of genuine progress and development.

“We must understand the importance of democracy because, outside it, everything else collapses,” Bishop Kukah said.

The bishop made these remarks while delivering the convocation lecture titled “Democracy in Nigeria and Other Parts of the World” at the 10th convocation ceremony of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), where 131 graduates emerged with First Class honours.
